LOS ANGELES— The Montana Legislature has passed House Bill 636, introducing new restrictions on cannabis products. The Senate approved the bill with a 37–12 vote, following the House’s 84–15 approval last month.

House Bill 636 proposes several changes to the state’s cannabis laws:

  • THC Limits: The bill reduces the maximum THC content in a single serving of an edible from 10 milligrams to 5 milligrams, while maintaining an 800-milligram limit per package for most product types.

  • Packaging Requirements: Cannabis products must be sold in child-resistant, resealable containers with plain white labels that only include the seller’s name, product name, THC or CBD content, health warnings, and ingredients.

  • Prohibitions: The bill reinforces prohibitions on sales to minors, disallows dispensaries from offering synthetic cannabinoids or alcohol, and introduces tighter oversight on product labeling and packaging approvals by the state’s Department of Revenue.

Supporters argue that these measures aim to enhance consumer safety and prevent accidental ingestion, particularly among children. Opponents express concerns about potential impacts on medical cannabis users and the cannabis industry.
