LOS ANGELES- The Arizona Department of Health Services has issued a recall for a product known as Onion Bhaji after laboratory tests detected possible contamination with Aspergillus, a fungus known to cause allergic reactions or infections. The state health department is urging consumers who have purchased this product to dispose of it immediately and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of exposure. Despite the potential health risks, no illnesses related to this incident have been reported thus far. The Flower Shop, the producer of the recalled product, has collaborated with distributors and retailers to ensure the removal of affected products from shelves across nearly 170 dispensaries in Arizona.

Arizona’s Cannabis Market Dynamics

Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2020, Arizona has witnessed substantial growth in its cannabis industry. Total cannabis sales reached $1.43 billion in 2023, with recreational cannabis making up over 76% of sales. This represents a significant increase from previous years, indicating a strong consumer shift towards recreational use over medicinal. The state has generated considerable revenue from excise taxes on these sales, which are allocated to various community and public safety programs. However, the medical cannabis market has seen a decline, with decreasing participation from qualifying patients. Despite this, the industry continues to thrive, contributing significantly to job creation in the state and preparing for an expansion in 2024.
