LOS ANGELES- Recent studies indicate a significant increase in psilocybin use across the United States, correlating with evolving public attitudes and regulatory developments. Data from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety reveal that lifetime psilocybin use among U.S. adults rose from 10% in 2019 to 12.1% in 2023, equating to over 31 million individuals. Past-year usage also climbed, with 3.1% of adults reporting consumption in 2023, up from previous years.

Demographic Trends

The increase is particularly notable among adults aged 18 to 29, with past-year use rising by 44% to 2.1% in 2023. Adults aged 30 and above experienced a 188% increase, reaching 1.8% in the same year. High school seniors also reported higher usage, with 2.5% indicating psilocybin use in the past year, a 53% increase from 2019.

Contributing Factors

Experts attribute this upward trend to several factors:

  • Mental Health Considerations: Individuals with conditions such as depression, anxiety, or chronic pain are more likely to report psilocybin use, potentially seeking alternative treatments.

  • Regulatory Changes: Decriminalization efforts in various states and municipalities have reduced legal barriers, making access to psilocybin more feasible.

  • Public Perception: Increased media coverage and scientific research highlighting potential therapeutic benefits have contributed to a more favorable public view of psilocybin.

Safety and Regulation Concerns

The rise in usage has been accompanied by a significant increase in psilocybin-related calls to poison control centers. Between 2019 and 2023, such calls increased by 201% among adults, 317% among adolescents, and 723% among children under 12. These figures underscore the need for comprehensive education and regulation to ensure safe consumption practices.
