New Study Affirms Long-Term Safety of CBD for Dogs
NEW YORK- In an era where CBD products have surged in popularity for their health benefits in humans, a new study funded by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) brings promising news for our four-legged friends. According to research published in the journal *Frontiers in Veterinary Science*, hemp-derived CBD and other cannabinoids are not only safe but could also be beneficial for dogs when used over a long period.
This significant study aimed to dispel uncertainties surrounding the long-term effects of CBD on canines. Through a comprehensive 90-day repeat dose study followed by a 14-day recovery period, the research employed a randomized, non-blinded, negative controlled, parallel design to evaluate its impact. A total of 32 healthy beagle dogs participated, divided into groups that received either a control substance or varying forms of cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), or cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), at a daily dose regulated for their size.
Remarkably, all animals completed the study without any significant adverse effects, suggesting that a daily dose of 5 milligrams of CBD per kilogram of body weight is well tolerated. This finding is bolstered by an analysis of over ten years of post-market surveillance data, further underscoring the safety of CBD supplements for dogs.
Bill Bookout, NASC President, highlighted the unparalleled scope of the study, noting its blend of controlled research data and extensive post-market surveillance. This dual approach provides a robust foundation for confirming the long-term safety of different cannabidiols in healthy dogs at the studied dose.
The implications of this study are vast for pet health and well-being. With the backing of rigorous research, pet owners can feel more confident in considering CBD products for their canine companions, especially those grappling with anxiety, pain, or other age-related issues. The findings not only improve the quality of life for these pets but also open the door to the integration of cannabinoids into veterinary medicine.
This research marks a crucial step towards the development of specialized CBD products tailored for pets, emphasizing proper doses and administration methods. It sets the stage for collaborative efforts among scientists, veterinarians, and industry leaders to innovate safe, effective cannabinoid-based wellness solutions for pets.
However, the study also serves as a reminder for pet owners to seek veterinary advice before introducing new supplements into their pets’ diets. While the study affirms the safety of CBD for dogs, individual responses can vary, underscoring the importance of professional guidance.
The broader implications of this study extend beyond pet care, reflecting the untapped potential of the cannabis plant in promoting comprehensive wellness across species. It emphasizes the need for continued investment in research, education, and legislative support to fully integrate CBD and other cannabinoids into health and wellness practices.
As the NASC’s study sheds light on the safe long-term use of CBD in dogs, it not only reinforces the growing trend towards natural wellness solutions but also signals a shift towards more holistic approaches in animal care. The publication of this study is expected to catalyze further research, solidifying CBD’s role in veterinary health and opening new avenues for holistic pet wellness.
