Utah Poll Indicates Majority Support for Recreational Cannabis Legalization
LOS ANGELES- A recent survey conducted by Noble Predictive Insights reveals that 52% of registered Utah voters are in favor of a ballot initiative to legalize cannabis for recreational use, while 38% oppose it, and 9% remain undecided.
The poll, commissioned by the medical cannabis advocacy group Keep Utah Medical, surveyed 609 registered voters between March 11 and 13, with a margin of error of ±3.97%.
Support for legalization varies across political affiliations: 76% of Democrats, 61% of independents, and 41% of Republicans expressed approval.
Despite the majority support indicated by the poll, leading state legislators have expressed opposition to recreational cannabis legalization. House Speaker Mike Schultz stated, “Expanding beyond medicinal purposes raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored.” Similarly, Senate President J. Stuart Adams warned of potential social issues, including homelessness and criminal problems, in states that have expanded cannabis use beyond medical purposes.
This development occurs nearly seven years after Utah voters approved medical cannabis in 2018, with 53% in favor.
The current findings suggest a shift in public opinion regarding cannabis use in Utah. However, any move toward legalization would require addressing the concerns of state leadership and navigating the state’s legislative process.
