NEWS: Ohio Dispensaries Set to Begin Recreational Cannabis Sales

CLEVELAND- Starting Tuesday, Ohioans aged 21 and over will have the opportunity to purchase recreational cannabis without needing a medical card. This marks a significant change in the state’s cannabis regulations.

The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control is issuing its first set of dual-use Certificates of Operation (COO) to 98 dispensaries across the state. These COOs allow dispensaries to sell both medical and recreational cannabis.

Sunnyside, located in Columbia Township, is one of several dispensaries in the Cincinnati area that has received the dual-license. This enables it to cater to both medical and recreational users once they receive their operational license.

While obtaining the COO is a key step, it doesn’t mean immediate sales can commence. Each dispensary needs to address factors such as staffing and inventory before they can start selling recreational cannabis. The COOs were issued based on the order in which dispensaries completed their applications and compliance processes.

The Ohio Department of Commerce plans to issue COOs to all remaining eligible dispensaries later this week.

“A big reason we were able to get to this point ahead of the Sept. 7 deadline was due to the foundation laid through the state’s existing Medical Cannabis Control Program,” stated James Canepa, DCC Superintendent. He highlighted that existing licensees had already met the stringent requirements of the medical program, facilitating a smoother transition to recreational sales.
