Massachusetts Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Reach Record $1.64 Billion in 2024
LOS ANGELES- In 2024, Massachusetts’ adult-use cannabis industry achieved a record $1.64 billion in gross sales, marking a significant milestone since the state’s first recreational dispensaries opened in November 2018.
The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) reported that this surge in sales contributed substantially to state and local tax revenues. Notably, the industry experienced its highest monthly sales in August 2024, totaling $147 million.
Worcester County emerged as a central hub for cannabis activity, generating approximately $1.4 billion in combined adult-use and medical cannabis sales since 2018. The county also hosts 86 marijuana retailers, tying with Middlesex County for the highest number in the state.
As of January 2025, the CCC has approved over 700 licenses for various cannabis establishments, reflecting the industry’s growth and the state’s commitment to a regulated market. The CCC is also exploring new avenues for expansion, including the introduction of social consumption licenses, which would allow for on-site consumption in designated establishments.
These developments underscore Massachusetts’ evolving cannabis landscape and its significant economic contributions.
