Ohio Legislature Considers Ban on Intoxicating Hemp Products

LOS ANGELES- Ohio lawmakers are evaluating Senate Bill 326, introduced by State Senator Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City), which aims to prohibit the sale of intoxicating hemp products. The proposed legislation defines such products as those containing more than 0.5 milligrams of delta-9 THC per serving, 2 milligrams per package, or 0.5 milligrams of total non-delta-9 THC per package.

The bill responds to concerns about the accessibility of hemp-derived products, like delta-8 THC, to minors. These items are often available in forms appealing to younger individuals, such as gummies and cookies, and are sold in venues without age restrictions, including convenience stores and gas stations.

Governor Mike DeWine has advocated for legislative action to regulate or ban these products, citing public health and safety issues. He emphasized the ease with which minors can purchase these items due to the absence of age limitations.

Proponents of the bill, including healthcare professionals and members of the hemp and cannabis industry, argue that it is essential for consumer safety. They highlight the inconsistent manufacturing and packaging of hemp products, which can lead to consumer confusion and potential health risks.

If enacted, Senate Bill 326 would establish criminal penalties for selling intoxicating hemp products, with stricter consequences for sales to individuals under 21. The legislation exempts non-intoxicating CBD products, such as creams and topicals, from these restrictions.

Trump Nominates Pam Bondi as Attorney General

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, for the position of U.S. Attorney General. Bondi, who served as Florida’s top prosecutor from 2011 to 2019, has been a longstanding ally of Trump and was part of his defense team during his first impeachment trial.

This nomination follows the withdrawal of former Representative Matt Gaetz from consideration for the same role amid resurfaced allegations of misconduct. Bondi’s nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.

Bondi’s tenure as Florida Attorney General included efforts to combat drug trafficking and address the opioid crisis. Her nomination has been met with both support and criticism, reflecting her close association with Trump and her previous legal positions.
