Upcoming Cannabis Legislation: Initiatives in Nebraska, Idaho, and Arkansas

LOS ANGELES- In the evolving landscape of U.S. cannabis legislation, three states—Nebraska, Idaho, and Arkansas—are poised to make significant strides. Nebraska and Idaho are looking to legalize medical cannabis, while Arkansas aims to expand its existing medical cannabis program.

Arkansas
Arkansas is set to consider an initiative that would significantly broaden its medical cannabis program, established in 2016. The proposed changes, which include allowing patients to cultivate their own cannabis at home and the removal of retail restrictions on certain smokeable products, are backed by Arkansans for Patient Access. The group is in the process of gathering the 90,704 signatures needed by July 5 to secure a spot on the November ballot. Additionally, the initiative proposes the use of telehealth for medical cannabis assessments, extends the validity of patient cards to three years, and broadens the scope of healthcare professionals who can recommend cannabis.

Nebraska
In Nebraska, the Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) is collecting signatures for two initiatives aimed at legalizing medical cannabis with the support of the medical community. The initiatives also propose the establishment of the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission to regulate cannabis for medical purposes. With a goal of 125,000 signatures by July for the November 2024 ballot, early polls suggest strong public support, with 70% of voters favoring the legalization of medical cannabis.

Idaho
Kind Idaho is spearheading an initiative in Idaho to legalize medical cannabis for individuals with qualifying conditions. The campaign, supported by the Marijuana Policy Project, requires 62,896 signatures by May 1, 2024, to appear on the November ballot. The proposal includes provisions for the possession and personal cultivation of cannabis, as well as the establishment of regulated dispensaries.

These initiatives reflect a broader national trend towards the legalization and expansion of cannabis use for medical purposes, demonstrating a shift in public perception and an increase in legislative action across the United States.
