American Weed Co Founders Call for Nationwide Legalization of Cannabis for Veterans

WASHINGTON– American Weed Co, a new cannabis company owned and operated by veterans, has announced it will devote a portion of its revenue to combating the epidemic of veteran suicide and modernizing outdated federal cannabis policies. Co-founders and co-CEOs, Ryan Brooks and Sean Gilfillan, have announced that they will travel to Washington, D.C., next week for meetings with lawmakers to push for the legalization of weed for every veteran nationwide.

Gilfillan, a U.S. Army veteran who was diagnosed with PTSD in 2007, and Brooks launched the company on Veterans Day in November 2022. They say their mission is personal for every member of the team, and that they are “stepping up for change” and calling on both Republicans and Democrats in Washington to do the same.

“We owe it to our Veterans to give them the tools to stop suicide, kick addiction and make the transition to civilian life. Why are we making this so hard? Every Veteran should be given the freedom to do what they feel is best for THEM,” said Gilfillan and Brooks.

The co-founders will be in Washington, D.C., the week of March 6 to urge legislators to support the Veterans Cannabis Use for Safe Healing Act (H.R. 394), bipartisan legislation authored by US Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) that would ensure Veterans receive the appropriate treatment to address their healthcare needs by prohibiting the Secretary of Veterans Affairs from denying a Veteran benefits due to the use of medical marijuana in states where the substance is legal.

The company will also donate up to 10 percent of its net profits each year to Stop Soldier Suicide, where Sean is on the advisory board. AmWeCo revenues also fund the company’s involvement in the National Cannabis Roundtable, an alliance of cannabis companies and other stakeholders working to modernize federal cannabis policy on behalf of veterans and other Americans from all walks of life.

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has expressed his support for the company’s mission, saying “What Sean and Ryan are doing is admirable, and my guess is it’s also going to be pretty effective.”

Brooks and Gilfillan said they plan to continue pressing lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle for common-sense action to reform US cannabis law, and will be in Washington regularly during the 118th Congress.
