BERLIN- Germany’s medical cannabis market is poised for substantial growth in 2024, with sales projected to surpass €420 million ($455 million), according to a report by Prohibition Partners. The country, which has led Europe in medical cannabis since legalizing it in 2017, continues to expand patient access, with over 200,000 registered users and public healthcare covering cannabis prescriptions obtained through pharmacies

Despite domestic cultivation efforts, Germany remains heavily reliant on imports, with a record 11,705 kilograms of medical cannabis brought into the country in the second quarter of 2024 to meet rising demand. Wholesale prices have also dropped to €2.3 per gram, pressuring producers as they navigate strict regulatory frameworks. The country imports from countries like Canada and Portugal, further driving its leadership in the European market

The recent passage of the Cannabis Act in April 2024, which allows for home cultivation and expanded access, has bolstered patient numbers, and the market is expected to reach €1 billion by 2028. The evolving regulatory landscape is also paving the way for future recreational cannabis markets, potentially impacting the medical cannabis sector.
