BREAKING: Trump Signals Possible Cannabis Reclassification Within Weeks

LOS ANGELES- President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration is actively considering shifting Cannabis to a lower-risk category under federal law — a move that could have sweeping implications for the industry.

Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump described the process as still in its early stages but suggested a decision could come soon.

“We’re looking at reclassification and will make a determination over the next few weeks,” Trump told reporters. “It’s a complicated subject, but hopefully we’ll get it right.”

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the administration is weighing a change from Schedule I — the same category as heroin and LSD — to Schedule III, which includes substances such as ketamine and anabolic steroids. Schedule I status means the federal government deems a drug to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule III classification indicates a lower risk of dependence and would ease restrictions on research while also lifting punitive tax burdens on Cannabis businesses.

Trump acknowledged hearing both positive and negative perspectives about Cannabis, noting in particular the medical applications some patients and doctors advocate.

“I’ve heard great things related to medical use, especially for pain, but I’ve also heard not-so-great things in other areas,” he said.

The discussion comes after the DEA, under the Biden administration, signaled support for reclassification. If the move goes forward, it would mark one of the most significant federal policy shifts on Cannabis in decades.
