Tips for Mellowing Out when Too High

3.6 min readPublished On: October 24th, 2019By

The story is all too familiar. You eat an infused cookie or take one dab too many and all of a sudden are lost in a fog of anxiety, sweat, and fatigue – you’re too high. Most cannabis fans have at least one story of overdoing it or have been witness to another’s despair*.  Some are able to self-soothe and tell themselves to relax, but is it always enough? For the majority, it’s going to take something more. If you ever find yourself far too faded, try one of the following tips and remember to tread lightly from now on.

Have a Snack

This is by far one of the easiest and most fun ways to help yourself come down. Enjoying some chips, pizza, or hummus (or whatever you prefer) will not only taste delicious but will also help to distract from the negative feelings of overdosing cannabis. Many pot smokers also state that eating makes them come down faster. Additionally, both mangoes and black peppercorns have shown efficacy in reducing the effects of THC. This is because mangoes, peppercorns, and cannabis all contain different terpenes which work synergistically alongside the phytocannabinoids found in marijuana. Simply smell a few peppercorns or eat a delicious mango and you should be well on your way to relief. And don’t forget to hydrate!

Wash Your Face

A simple way to snap out of a bummer is to splash a bit of water on your face. Therapists will often recommend this to patients who suffer from panic attacks in order to help distract from the episode. Taking a shower or bath is even better; not only will you get squeaky clean but you can also use aromatherapy (think eucalyptus essential oil or lavender soap) for a pleasant-smelling road to relaxation.

Take Some CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid also found in cannabis, has been shown to help alleviate negative effects that THC can have (paranoia, racing thoughts, etc.). Scientists found that CBD reduces anxiety caused by delta-9-THC as it has a way of calming excess signaling and activity in the brain’s endocannabinoid system. This discovery has led to many cannabis users to switch to a strain that has both CBD and THC, or an oil that is a 1:1 ratio. If you find yourself too high, try taking a 10mg CBD capsule or a hit of CBD oil – you should be back to normal soon after.

Find Something to Laugh At

They say that laughter is the best medicine, and it’s most certainly true when you find yourself too high. Get on your streaming service and find a classic movie or TV show that you know gets you going. Always Sunny, Trailer Park Boys, or Ridiculousness are a great place to start – simple and silly humor that will make you LOL with ease. If you don’t like screens, consider picking up some comic anthologies or issues of Found Magazine the next time you’re at the bookstore. They’re the perfect five minute pick up, and a great conversation starter for your pals.

Phone a Friend

There’s absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about if you end up far too faded. Chances are you have at least one friend you could text – or even call – who understands what you’re going through. You can count on them for reassurance and a funny GIF or two. If you’re with a group of people and feel awkward about the situation, don’t be afraid to take a break (or message a friend sitting nearby on the downlow) to help calm down. If you don’t have any friends who are awake or available to answer, go to Texts From Last Night and search for the words “too high.” You’ll find hundreds of texts just like the one you want to send.

Accidentally overdoing it on cannabis is a common and unpleasant occurrence, but can easily be avoided. Remember to start small (especially on edibles) until you find the perfect place for your individual needs. Thinking of introducing a friend to weed? Read this guide first to ensure a fun and safe experience for all.
