Thailand Moves to Restrict Cannabis Use to Medical Purposes Within 40 Days
LOS ANGELES- Thailand’s Public Health Minister, Somsak Thepsutin, has announced plans to implement regulations within 40 days that will restrict cannabis use to medical purposes only. Under the forthcoming rules, both Thai nationals and foreigners will be required to present a medical certificate to legally purchase cannabis products.
This initiative follows concerns over the proliferation of recreational cannabis use since its decriminalization in 2022. The lack of comprehensive legislation governing its sale and consumption has led to a surge in cannabis-related businesses, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Bangkok and Phuket .
The new regulation aims to ensure that cannabis is used strictly for medical purposes. According to Somruek Chungsaman, head of the health ministry’s Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine, individuals seeking to purchase cannabis flowers for smoking must have a doctor’s prescription .
In addition to domestic concerns, the government is addressing issues related to cannabis smuggling. Recent incidents have highlighted Thailand’s role as a source of cannabis being illegally exported to countries with strict drug laws. Authorities have reported increased inspections at airports and have established a joint committee involving customs, immigration, and other relevant agencies to tackle the problem .
While a comprehensive cannabis control bill is being drafted, the health ministry is utilizing existing laws to expedite the implementation of these new regulations. The proposed measures include potential restrictions on dosage and duration of use, with penalties for non-compliance .
Cannabis advocates have expressed concerns over the necessity of the medical certificate requirement, citing a decline in usage and a decrease in cannabis shop numbers . However, the government maintains that these steps are essential to regulate the industry and prevent misuse.
