LOS ANGELES- Thailand is set to enforce stricter controls on cannabis sales following a notable increase in smuggling attempts, particularly involving foreign tourists. The Ministry of Public Health announced that, within approximately 40 days, cannabis dispensaries will be required to sell products exclusively to individuals possessing medical prescriptions or licenses. Additionally, sales will be limited to quantities sufficient for 30 days of use.

These measures respond to recent incidents, including the interception of 73 kilograms of cannabis at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Authorities have observed that cannabis smuggled from Thailand has reached countries such as the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong.

Since the decriminalization of cannabis in 2022, Thailand has seen the establishment of over 10,700 dispensaries nationwide. However, the absence of comprehensive regulations has led to concerns about the drug’s accessibility and potential misuse.

In response to the smuggling surge, Thai authorities have intensified airport inspections. Notably, in March, 22 suitcases containing 375 kilograms of cannabis were seized at Samui Island’s airport, leading to the arrest of 13 foreigners, predominantly British nationals.

Collaborative efforts between Thai and UK authorities have resulted in significant seizures. Operation Chaophraya, initiated in July 2024, has led to the arrest of over 50 British nationals in Thailand for attempted cannabis smuggling. Furthermore, a joint agreement has achieved a 90% reduction in cannabis shipments from Thailand to the UK via postal services.
