Single Psilocybin Dose Shows Promise in Easing OCD Symptoms, Study Finds
LOS ANGELES – In a pioneering study, researchers from the University of Hertfordshire and Imperial College have uncovered the potential of psilocybin to alleviate symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Published in Comprehensive Psychiatry on July 1, 2025, the study demonstrates that a single 10 mg dose of oral psilocybin can significantly reduce compulsive behaviors, offering a glimmer of hope for those with this challenging condition.
The trial involved 19 participants with OCD, each receiving two doses of psilocybin (1 mg and 10 mg) administered four weeks apart in a clinical setting. The 10 mg dose stood out, delivering a rapid and substantial reduction in compulsive symptoms that persisted for up to a week. The study reported a statistically significant effect, with participants experiencing no serious side effects, highlighting psilocybin’s safety profile. While the 1 mg dose also showed some benefit, the higher dose proved more effective and well-tolerated.
The relief, however, was temporary, fading after two weeks, which suggests that sustained benefits may require multiple doses or a refined treatment protocol. The researchers noted an overwhelming interest from the OCD community, with a high volume of applications for the study, signaling a strong demand for innovative therapies. Current treatments, such as SSRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy, often fall short for many patients, leaving a critical gap that psychedelics might fill.
This study aligns with broader psychedelic research trends. A 2023 review by the American Medical Association found psilocybin effective in treating major depression and bipolar II disorder, reinforcing its versatility as a mental health tool. However, the small sample size of this OCD study underscores the need for larger, randomized, placebo-controlled trials to validate and expand on these findings.
As the psychedelic renaissance gains traction, this research offers a compelling case for psilocybin’s role in mental health care. For those trapped in the relentless cycle of OCD, a single dose could be the key to unlocking a brighter, less burdened future, paving the way for a new era of treatment possibilities.
