Legal Cannabis Consumption at Detroit’s 420 Music Festival Marks a Milestone For The City’s Growing Cannabis Industry
DETROIT– The city of Detroit is set to host its first-ever cannabis festival, a music event that will allow visitors to consume marijuana legally. The 420 Cannabis Music Festival, organized by D & G Venture, is slated to take place on April 29 at 2000 Brooklyn St. and surrounding areas, with an indoor/outdoor setup to accommodate visitors.
The festival was approved by the city council with a vote of 7-0, with members citing the transparency of the process and the positive track record of D & G Venture’s previous events in the state. The company has organized five other cannabis-centric events in Michigan, all of which have had fewer arrests and incidents than alcohol-centric events.
The event is being hailed as a way to celebrate the cannabis industry’s growth in the city, with council members noting that other cities are taking advantage of similar opportunities. The festival is also a way for the council to fully execute the city’s cannabis ordinance, according to Council President Pro Tem James Tate.
Some concerns were raised about the lack of budtenders or monitors to oversee consumption, but organizers noted that state laws limiting purchases would remain in effect. The event will feature several DJs and live musical performances, with general admission tickets priced at $30.
Requirements for holding the festival include private security, city permits, and a business license, in addition to council approval. This is the third 420 Music Festival to be held in Detroit, but the first to allow legal consumption. Council Member Coleman Young II expressed excitement about future events, citing the safety, fun, and entertainment he has experienced at similar festivals in the past.
