MADISON— Wisconsin Democratic representatives are bolstering their endeavors to legalize adult recreational cannabis, citing potential economic and social benefits.

Senator Melissa Agard and Representative Darin Madison are advocating for legalization, asserting that it will enhance public safety through regulation, bolster state agriculture, and potentially generate billions in state revenue by bringing the industry “out of the shadows.”

The proposed legislation outlines a plan for allocating 60% of the cannabis tax revenue towards communities disproportionately affected by past racial cannabis policies, as reported by the Wisconsin Examiner. Madison emphasized the stark racial disparities in cannabis-related arrests and convictions, despite similar usage rates across diverse racial groups.

Agard, who has actively toured to rally support for legalization, highlighted the extensive bipartisan backing, noting that nearly 70% of Wisconsin voters are in favor of legalization, according to recent polls. She also countered concerns of opposition, deeming them primarily based on misinformation. Agard reassured that states with legalized cannabis have not experienced a surge in youth usage and have implemented measures to address impaired driving and ensure the safety and rights of both employers and employees.

“Wisconsin is losing millions of dollars of revenue to our neighboring states due to the GOP’s refusal to listen to the will of the people. Wisconsin’s legislature cannot afford to sit idly by – we must legalize to promote economic development in Wisconsin,” Agard voiced on Twitter in January.

The push for legalization in Wisconsin echoes the growing national momentum towards cannabis reform as states across the U.S. continue to adopt more lenient and inclusive cannabis policies, reflecting evolving public opinion and acknowledging the potential economic windfall from the burgeoning industry.
