New Mexico Appoints Colorado Cannabis Expert to Lead Regulatory Division
LOS ANGELES—In a move reflecting the growing significance of the cannabis industry in the Southwest, New Mexico’s Cannabis Control Division has named Todd Stevens, a seasoned professional from Colorado’s expansive cannabis market, as its next director.
Stevens, who recently held the position of manager of training and development at Native Roots Cannabis Co., one of Colorado’s major cannabis enterprises, brings with him a wealth of experience from a state known for its pioneering role in cannabis legalization and regulation.
This appointment comes at a pivotal time for New Mexico’s Cannabis Control Division, which has seen a series of turnovers in the past year. The division is currently intensifying its efforts to ensure businesses adhere to state regulations. One of the most recent enforcement actions involved a state district judge approving the division’s plea to suspend operations at an Albuquerque-based business. The establishment was allegedly involved in the unauthorized sale of out-of-state cannabis products and was producing extracts without the necessary licenses.
In a statement, Stevens expressed his vision for the role, emphasizing both economic growth and consumer protection. “In the past year, New Mexico has established a thriving new industry, licensed more than 2,000 cannabis businesses, and held those businesses to the high standard that comes with an adult-use cannabis market,” Stevens remarked.
Stevens’ tenure in Colorado was marked by significant achievements. He played a crucial role in the design and implementation of training and recertification programs for over 200 retail employees. Additionally, he supervised operations across five dispensaries, showcasing his comprehensive understanding of the cannabis retail landscape.
As New Mexico continues to navigate the complexities of a burgeoning cannabis market, Stevens’ appointment signals the state’s commitment to fostering a robust, compliant, and safe industry for both businesses and consumers.
