Colorado Governor Jared Polis Announces Plans to Pardon Convictions Related to Psychedelics

DENVER – In a groundbreaking move, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado (D) unveiled his intention to issue pardons for all criminal convictions in the state pertaining to psychedelic drugs. The announcement came during his speech at the recently held Psychedelic Conference in Denver, according to reliable sources.

Governor Polis, who last month signed a bill enacting medical psilocybin legalization and decriminalizing the personal use and cultivation of other natural psychedelics, highlighted the importance of rectifying past convictions. This decision follows the successful psychedelic decriminalization voter initiative in the state last year.

During his address, Governor Polis also emphasized his desire for insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, to be mandated to cover the expenses associated with psychedelic therapies. He underscored the disparity that currently exists, stating, “It is still ridiculous that in this day and age somebody suffering from anxiety, depression, [post-traumatic stress disorder] can get medical coverage for very costly prescription drugs but cannot get coverage for a treatment in a healing center that will address some of the underlying causes of the issue.”

The pardons, Governor Polis explained, will play a crucial role in preventing individuals from being held back from employment opportunities due to past convictions. In 2021, he had already issued 1,351 pardons for Coloradans convicted of cannabis possession, demonstrating his commitment to addressing the consequences of outdated drug policies.

The ballot measure, which received approval from voters, decriminalized the possession, cultivation, and sharing of psychedelics and hallucinogens, including substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline, and DMT, among individuals aged 21 and above. Governor Polis has repeatedly referred to these reforms as a “thoughtful, common sense approach.”
