LOS ANGELES- The investigation into the JuicyFields cannabis investment scam, believed to involve fraudulent activities amounting to nearly $700 million, has culminated in the arrest of nine individuals. This case, noted as one of the largest in the cannabis sector, was propelled by a collaborative effort among European law enforcement agencies, with coordination by Europol.

On April 11, more than 400 officers across 11 countries executed nine arrest warrants and conducted 38 house searches, as reported by Europol. The operation revealed that the scheme had potentially affected about 186,000 individuals worldwide, primarily online investors from Europe, resulting in estimated losses of €645 million ($684 million). These figures might not fully capture the extent of the unreported damages.

JuicyFields emerged as a global platform, enticing investors with the prospect of high returns from cannabis cultivation. Marketed as “e-growers,” participants invested significant amounts through both bank transfers and cryptocurrencies. However, subsequent investigations suggest that the platform may have engaged in a Ponzi scheme, misrepresenting partnerships with legitimate cannabis cultivation operations, and ultimately freezing user accounts and absconding with the funds.

Authorities have pinpointed suspects from various countries, identifying key figures in the Dominican Republic, where significant operations, including property searches, were conducted. The crackdown has led to the seizure or freezing of assets including approximately €4.7 million ($4.9 million) in bank accounts, €1.5 million ($1.6 million) in cryptocurrencies, along with luxury vehicles, artworks, and other valuable assets totaling millions.

The surge in cannabis reform across the United States and several other regions worldwide has seen the legal cannabis industry attract substantial investment. This backdrop has also paved the way for criminal elements to exploit the evolving regulatory landscape and investor enthusiasm for cannabis, promoting seemingly low-risk, high-return investment opportunities.

The widespread impact of the JuicyFields scam has not only led to significant financial losses but also sparked global media coverage, inspired documentaries, and initiated a dedicated victim support website to keep affected parties informed about ongoing legal proceedings.
