Arkansas Bans THC Products Derived from Hemp Ahead of Projected $300 Million Medical Cannabis Sales

LOS ANGELES– Effective August 1, a new law in Arkansas will prohibit the sale of THC products derived from hemp, as reported by 40/29 News. This measure comes amid the state’s projected record-breaking medical cannabis sales, anticipated to reach $300 million this year.

The banned products include hemp-derived delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, and delta-10 THC, all of which will be added to the state’s controlled substances list. To sell any hemp-derived consumable products, retailers must now obtain a permit from Arkansas Tobacco Control, as stipulated in the law.

Dawn Harpell, proprietor of a CBD and hemp store in Rogers, shared her concerns with 40/29 News, stating that some of her customers have relinquished their medical cannabis registry cards in favor of shopping at her store, citing slightly lower prices compared to the state’s medical cannabis dispensaries. Over the last two years, Harpell’s business has shifted significantly towards delta-8 and similar products, comprising approximately 70% to 80% of her sales. The ban poses a major challenge for her business, and she worries that without these products, she may have no choice but to close her doors. Harpell expressed her apprehensions to 40/29 News.

The law received approval when Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed it into effect in April. Notably, the legislation does not prohibit the transportation of hemp-derived products through the state.

As Arkansas prepares to implement this ban, both cannabis retailers and consumers are bracing for its impact on the rapidly growing industry in the state. With medical cannabis sales soaring to new heights, the move has raised questions about the potential repercussions on local businesses and the broader cannabis market. As August 1 approaches, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments to assess the law’s implications for the thriving business and finance landscape in the region.
