Illinois Cannabis Sales Surpass $2 Billion in 2024
LOS ANGELES- In 2024, Illinois’ legal cannabis market achieved sales exceeding $2 billion, marking a 2.5% increase from the previous year. This total comprises approximately $1.722 billion in adult-use cannabis sales and over $285 million in medical cannabis sales. The state collected more than $490 million in sales taxes from these transactions.
A record-setting 56,318,082 cannabis items were sold in 2024, reflecting a 13% increase from 2023. Of these, 48,953,392 items were sold through adult-use dispensaries. Sales to Illinois residents accounted for approximately $1.338 billion, while out-of-state customers purchased over $385 million worth of products.
Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the economic impact of the state’s cannabis industry, noting its role in job creation and tax revenue generation. He also expressed concerns about the unregulated hemp market, emphasizing that untested products could pose risks to consumers and undermine licensed businesses.
As of now, Illinois has 244 adult-use cannabis dispensaries, including 134 social equity dispensaries. An additional 70 applicants from the 2022 social equity lotteries and 51 from the 2023 Social Equity Criteria Lottery are in the process of obtaining full licenses.
The state’s cannabis industry continues to expand, contributing to economic development and providing resources for community reinvestment initiatives.
