German Medical Cannabis Market Sees Significant Growth
LOS ANGELES- Germany’s medical cannabis industry is experiencing substantial growth, driven by recent regulatory reforms and increasing patient demand. Companies such as Cantourage are at the forefront of this expansion, capitalizing on the evolving legal landscape and market opportunities.
Cantourage’s Revenue Surge
Berlin-based Cantourage reported a revenue of €51.4 million ($57.5 million) for 2024, marking a 118% increase compared to the previous year. The company’s operations include importing and processing cannabis from countries like Jamaica, Uganda, and New Zealand. To ensure security, Cantourage maintains a facility in Bavaria with stringent measures, including a 75-centimeter-thick steel door to safeguard its inventory.
Regulatory Reforms Boosting the Market
The implementation of the Cannabis Act (Cannabisgesetz) on April 1, 2024, has played a pivotal role in reshaping Germany’s cannabis industry. The legislation permits adults to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public and up to 50 grams at home, along with the cultivation of up to three plants for personal use. Additionally, non-profit cannabis social clubs with a maximum of 500 members became legal on July 1, 2024.
These changes have led to a significant increase in medical cannabis imports, with over 70 tonnes imported in 2024, more than double the amount from the previous year.
The German medical cannabis market is projected to reach a value of approximately €1.7 billion by the end of 2025, assuming that 1% of the population becomes cash-paying medical cannabis patients.
This growth has attracted foreign investment, particularly from North American companies. For instance, Canada’s OrganiGram invested €14 million in Berlin-based Sanity Group in 2024, aiming to strengthen its presence in the European market.
Despite the positive trajectory, the industry faces challenges such as potential oversupply and political uncertainties. With cultivation capacities increasing, there are concerns about market saturation in the near future.
