Ohio Recreational Cannabis Sales Reach Over $44 Million in First Month
LOS ANGELES- Ohio’s legal cannabis market saw strong initial performance, with over $67.3 million in total sales between August 6 and August 31, according to the state’s Division of Cannabis Control (DCC). Of this, $44 million came from recreational cannabis purchases, while medical marijuana patients accounted for $23.3 million in sales.
During this period, Ohio saw 551,737 recreational transactions, involving 675,364 units of product, and around 240,000 medical marijuana transactions, with 859,236 units sold. The average price per gram of cannabis flower decreased steadily, falling from $9.40 on August 10 to $9.00 by the end of the month.
Ohio’s recreational cannabis market, which began under new laws enacted in December 2023, allows adults over 21 to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and 15 grams of concentrates. With 120 licensed dispensaries currently selling recreational cannabis, the state expects further growth, with stand-alone recreational stores projected to open in 2025.
Industry forecasts suggest Ohio’s cannabis market could generate $1 billion in sales by 2025, potentially reaching up to $2 billion by 2027. Despite this growth, the state’s recreational cannabis program launched without a social equity component, a feature seen in other states like Maryland and Missouri.
Retailers like Klutch Cannabis, a vertically integrated operator, reported significant customer turnout, with long lines and heavy sales activity on the first day of recreational sales. Ohio is now the 24th U.S. state to offer adult-use cannabis, joining other recent market entrants in the Midwest.
