Illinois Adult-Use Cannabis Sales in June Hit $136 Million, Third Highest on Record
LOS ANGELES– In June, adult-use cannabis sales in Illinois reached an impressive milestone, totaling $136 million, according to data from the Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer (CROO). This marked the highest sales total of the year and the third-highest ever recorded in the state. In-state consumers contributed $102 million to the figure, while out-of-state consumers accounted for $34 million in cannabis spending.
Meanwhile, medical cannabis sales in Illinois remained stable in June, with a total of $27 million, identical to the previous month’s figures. However, these sales were down by $1 million compared to April’s totals.
The surge in adult-use cannabis sales in June saw an increase of $3 million from May and a notable $4 million more than the sales total recorded in April. It is worth noting that Illinois experienced a dip in sales from $128 million in January to $120 million in February. This drop can be attributed to the initiation of adult-use cannabis sales in neighboring Missouri, which offers the lowest excise tax on cannabis products, set at 6%, according to Tax Foundation data. By comparison, Illinois imposes a 7% excise tax on the value at the wholesale level, a 10% tax on cannabis flower or products with less than 35% THC, a 20% tax on products infused with cannabis (e.g., edible products), and a 25% tax on any product with a THC concentration exceeding 35%.
Throughout Illinois, the price of cannabis flower at dispensaries remained steady at $10 per gram for the third consecutive month. This consistency has likely contributed to the sustained interest and sales in the cannabis market.
The latest figures demonstrate the strong demand and economic significance of the adult-use cannabis market in Illinois, as consumers continue to show their interest in legal cannabis products.
