Calgary Authorizes Cannabis Sales at Adults-Only Events
LOS ANGELES- Calgary City Council has approved amendments to the Business Licence Bylaw, permitting licensed cannabis retailers to operate temporary sales at adults-only events, such as festivals and outdoor shows. This decision aligns the city’s regulations with provincial policies established by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) in 2024.
Under the new framework, existing cannabis store licensees can establish mobile retail units at events restricted to individuals aged 18 and over. These mobile units will be subject to inspection and enforcement by the AGLC, ensuring compliance with provincial standards.
Consumption of purchased cannabis products will be limited to designated areas within the event premises, maintaining adherence to public health guidelines. Alberta Health Services (AHS) has recommended that events offering cannabis sales should not simultaneously offer alcohol, to mitigate potential health risks associated with co-consumption.
The bylaw amendment passed with a 6–4 vote in the city council, reflecting a divided stance among council members. Proponents argue that the change provides a regulated environment for cannabis sales at events, while opponents express concerns about public health and safety implications.
This policy change positions Calgary alongside other municipalities in Alberta, such as Edmonton, which have enacted similar measures to integrate cannabis sales into adult-only events.
