LOS ANGELES – A groundbreaking Pew Research Center survey conducted from January 27 to February 2, 2025, shows that 87% of Americans support legalizing marijuana, reflecting a seismic shift in public sentiment.

The poll results, released on July 8, 2025, highlight that 54% of U.S. adults support legalization for both medical and recreational use, while only 33% back legalization for medical purposes only. A historical shift towards marijuana acceptance is evidenced by the fact that only 12% [!] of respondents believe it should remain illegal.

This widespread perception transcends political divides, garnering support from 93% of Democrats and 84% of Republicans for some form of legalization. Notably, 66% of Democrats and 43% of Republicans back full recreational and medical legalization, showcasing bipartisan momentum. The study also revealed some demographic nuances. Specifically, 65% of adults under 30 voiced their approval of full legalization, as opposed to only 31% of adults aged 75 and older. Racial differences are evident, with 58% of White and 57% of Black adults supporting full legalization, while Hispanic (42%) and Asian (39%) adults show lower support for recreational use.

The data underscores a cultural shift, with 54% of Americans now living in states where recreational marijuana is legal, and 79% residing in counties with at least one dispensary. Since Colorado and Washington pioneered recreational legalization in 2012, states like Delaware, Minnesota, and Ohio have followed, though 2024 saw setbacks in Florida, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Pew’s findings align with decades of growing acceptance, with support for legalization jumping from 12% in 1969 to 70% in Gallup’s 2023 poll. As public opinion continues to evolve, pressure mounts for federal reform, especially as President Trump has signaled potential action on rescheduling marijuana. This poll signals a clear mandate: Americans are ready for change in cannabis policy.
