Cannabis Legalization Measures Face Challenges in 2024 Elections

LOS ANGELES- In the 2024 elections, marijuana legalization measures faced significant challenges across multiple states. Notably, only Nebraska succeeded in relaxing restrictions by approving two ballot measures that legalized medical cannabis and established a regulatory framework for its use.

Conversely, voters in Florida, North Dakota, and South Dakota rejected proposals to legalize recreational marijuana. In Florida, Amendment 3 aimed to legalize possession of up to three ounces of marijuana for adults aged 21 and over, but it failed to achieve the required 60% supermajority, despite receiving nearly 56% support.

These outcomes indicate that, while there is growing acceptance of medical cannabis, particularly in states like Nebraska, broader legalization efforts for recreational use continue to encounter resistance in various parts of the United States.
