Curaleaf Granted Approval to Continue Selling Recreational Cannabis in New Jersey After Initial Denial

LOS ANGELES– Curaleaf Holdings, a global provider of consumer cannabis products, has won a significant legal victory in New Jersey. The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Board reversed its earlier decision to deny the company’s adult-use cannabis licenses. The board met on Monday, April 17th, to reconsider the renewal of Curaleaf’s cultivation and sales licenses. The commission initially voted to deny the license renewal on Thursday, April 13th, but after Curaleaf’s employees and public relations arm, Mattio, held a pro-business rally, the board reversed its decision.

Curaleaf CEO Matt Darin praised the board’s decision, calling it a significant victory for the company’s 500 New Jersey employees. Darin said Curaleaf had fulfilled every requirement necessary for the renewal of the licenses and the company was in good standing with the commission. Curaleaf Chairman Boris Jordan stated that the decision was a victory for the company and that Curaleaf remained open for business.

As part of the approval, Curaleaf must provide additional information about its labor practices and demonstrate compliance with New Jersey law. The company has faced allegations of labor law violations, including union busting and withholding employee tips. The board will meet again on June 1st to assess Curaleaf’s compliance with the additional requirements. If the company fails to meet the conditions, the board may impose penalties, such as fines, or revoke the renewed licenses.
